15.11.2012

On November 14, the court hearing took place in Osaka prefecture (Japan), according to which the nurse from Canada, accused in the attempt to transport the prohibited prychostimulants to the territory of Japan, was sentenced for the 6 years of imprisonment and fee in the amount of 2,5 millions of yen.

Elaine Chan, the employee from one of the clinics in Canada was arrested at the Kansai airport (Japan), while trying to carry the consignment of the strong psychostimulants with the common weight if 150 grams, prohibited to import to the territory of Japan, through customs control prohibited. Later, the smuggler was charged with the violation of the "Law on drugs" in the part, which provides punishment for the "transportation of stimulants for personal purposes."

The lawyers of the detainee tried to challenge the court's decision, referring to the fact that during the arrest of Elaine Chan there was no translator, which was a serious violation of Japanese law. The prosecutor in turn denied this charge, arguing that the law has been fully respected and the whole process was held at the language clear for the detainee.

"The spread of drugs in this country is a serious crime, therefore I find the imposed punishment completely justified,” Ikurou Toishi, the judge assistant commented on the verdict.
